A Parent’s Guide to Future-Oriented Careers for Children
The prospect of exploring your child’s future career aspirations as a parent is not an unrealistic idea. In many traditional households, parents often take the lead in selecting career paths for their children. While this approach has proven beneficial for some, as parents possess valuable experience and can guide their children towards fields with significant opportunities, there are instances where it can inadvertently jeopardize a child’s future. Why? Excelling in an ideal career depends on various factors such as interests, abilities, and skills. Unfortunately, some parents, in their well-intentioned desire for their children’s success, may inadvertently steer them towards careers that undermine their happiness.
I am not opposed to parents choosing career paths for their children. Instead, I advocate for parents and children working collaboratively to create pathways that foster their children’s thriving rather than mere survival. To achieve this, parents must equip themselves with knowledge about current career trends and understand their children’s strengths, interests, and abilities.
Addressing their children’s interests requires parents to engage with teachers, school administrators, friends, and family members while also observing and conversing with their children.
Parents can also utilize online personality and/or career tests to gather information about their children. It is surprising how accurate these tests can be—I once took a coding personality test that accurately revealed the career I should pursue. It aligned with the programming languages I desired to learn and the professional path I had envisioned for myself. This experience not only brought me happiness but also instilled confidence in the value of personality tests as complementary tools for discovering one’s potential.
Regarding staying informed about trends, parents can read books, attend conferences, and even consult with experts to gain insights into future career prospects for their children.
As a tech professional who transitioned from a humanities background, I have witnessed the rewarding nature of this path. It is no secret that technology will revolutionize the job market, and as parents, it is our responsibility to equip our children with the skills and adaptable mindsets needed to thrive in the new normal.

I vividly recall the time my daughter came to live with me. I was determined to provide her with a global perspective. I employed many of the strategies I mentioned earlier—I encouraged, inspired, and empowered her in various ways. Today, she aspires to become a software engineer. While this fills me with joy because it promises a rewarding career, I also recognize that she may choose a different path. However, the skills she is acquiring today will position her favorably in any career she eventually selects.
This is precisely why I wrote “Tech Hustle” and now also “Tech Savvy“—career guides for teenagers. “Tech Hustle” is a fictional storybook designed to inspire young boys and girls to explore futuristic skills. “Tech Savvy,” on the other hand, serves as a practical guide, compiled from insights shared by career professionals and their publications. In this guide, teenagers embark on a journey of self-discovery, journaling their strengths, weaknesses, and more, while also exploring top personality tests and conducting research in areas of interest.
I am genuinely thrilled about the debut edition of “Tech Savvy” because I hope it sparks conversations between teenagers and their guardians that will ultimately inform their decision-making for the future.
While “Tech Hustle” serves as an inspirational tool, “Tech Savvy” empowers them to take actionable steps.
Although “Tech Savvy” was written with young adults in mind, I am confident it can benefit anyone, like myself, contemplating a transition into the field of technology.
