Tell me, what’s more challenging: running a business or coordinating a life-saving camp in the aftermath of a devastating earthquake? In such situations, every second counts. A delay leads to loss of lives; every moment wasted means more lives perish. Now, isn’t that the essence of running a business in uncertain times like ours?

This past week tested me physically, mentally, and intellectually. Stepping into the shoes of both a team member and a leader during various exercises, I told myself I wanted to push my limits, and that’s exactly what happened. This was made possible by my invaluable team members, who repeatedly proved their support and resilience.

We walked on ropes, built our own boats, trekked through hilly terrains, and faced challenges that were both fun and adventurous. Yet beyond the adventure lay an enriching experience, learning new management and leadership principles from Security Leader and Executive Marine Broquet and the SCYFCO team.

This begs the question: was this adventure necessary? Was it worth it? For me, the answer is unequivocally yes. I would advocate for this kind of training for everyone even if they don’t immediately see its value. Why? Because as I navigated each challenge and difficulty, I couldn’t help but compare the uncertainty we faced with the current revolution brought about by Artificial Intelligence (AI).
We are living in uncertain times. Just as we faced unpredictability during our exercises, businesses today are grappling with similar challenges.

Many leaders don’t have all the answers. As someone who has worked on digital transformation projects and observed countless discussions about AI on LinkedIn, I believe we are navigating uncharted waters. Some companies are seeing declines in sales and value as the world rapidly adopts emerging technologies. Others are embracing uncertainty head-on—even without a complete picture.

If you’re among those embracing uncertainty, it’s time to switch to crisis mode, to steer your team toward clearer waters. However, doing so requires a different set of tools, whether they come from established business practices or lessons learned from mentors who’ve weathered similar storms before us. Without adapting to these changes, we risk becoming another statistic, another business that didn’t survive the storm.
